Q: What are some myths about dental implants?

A: There are a lot of myths about dental implants.  Some people say, “Well, is it still experimental.”  And they’ve been around for over 50 years now.  The other is discomfort, pain.  We really don’t see that very often.  There’s some soreness involved.  The other myth that I hear about: “It’s going to take forever, Doc.  My friend had this placed.  It took two years – a year.”  With today’s technology, the systems that we’re using, a patient can get an implant restored in six to eight weeks.

Q: Can dental implants replace just one tooth or many teeth?q7_thumb-1024x577

A: Dental implants could be used to replace just a single tooth, but often times patients come in and need replacement of a whole
mouth of teeth, and we are using many different techniques to replace a whole jaw at one time.  There are many options for replacing multiple teeth.  For a denture replacement, I can place two, three, or four implants, and that is what we call an implant-supported denture and that snaps on.  So the denture snaps onto the implants; they can still remove it, but the support is increased about 75 percent from where they were at zero percent.  With a permanent situation, that is where we place four to six implants – the denture – or they can get a bridge that looks just like a natural set of teeth, and that’s placed permanently.  Patients have a choice today of which system they want to use.  Some patients prefer permanent; some patients want to have removable teeth.

Q: What is your success rate with dental implants?

A: The national success rates for dental implants are over 90 percent today.  In our office, we are much higher.  Currently, we run between 98 and 99 percent success rates.  Having practiced periodontics for over 25 years, I’ve never seen happier patients then when they come in after they’ve had their implants restored.  They come in and they hug and kiss me, and it makes me feel great that I can provide this service for them.
