Annual Oral Cancer Awareness Walk
It was a chilly, misty morning on Saturday, April 23, 2016. The temperature may have been low for late-April, but our spirits were high as we arrived at Hecksher State Park in East Islip for the Annual Oral Cancer Awareness Walk! We were ready to get our bodies moving and do our part to raise Oral Cancer Awareness.
We arrived at the park and were greeted by the sound of music from a live DJ, the sight of warm faces of volunteers, sponsors, organizers,
participants and the smell of fresh coffee and snacks. The fun filled day included a wide range of activities from face-painting, inflatable bounce castles, a photo booth, and the best – a free Oral Cancer Screening on site!
Our team included Kathleen, her mom Noreen, Nicole, Veronica, and Derek, who was brave enough to run the 5K race, rather than walk. Our IT Company, AXE Creatives, was also a sponsor/participant at the event. At the end of the event, there was a celebration of awards for the runners, raffles, and a balloon ceremony “releasing the doves,” each representing a lost loved one to a battle with Oral Cancer. It was a poignant reminder for what the day was about and how essential early detection is for a healthy life and future.
The organizers of the event say it best, “We participate with the hope that those lost to oral cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face oral cancer will be supported, but most importantly, that one-day oral cancer will be eliminated. Only when many individuals raise their voices together and collectively contribute their resources, will change take place.”
Derek was pleased to see the event as a comfortable environment for kids. “It’s a great day out for young families, it’s for a good cause, but most importantly, it makes the topic of Oral Cancer Screenings a less ‘scary’ thing to talk about,” Derek remarked. Speaking about Oral Cancer may be uncomfortable for many, but it is imperative to get the message out there what may cause Oral Cancer and that early detection is the key.
The day was inspirational and aligned with Farber Center’s passion for taking Oral Cancer Awareness to the foreground of conversation. We can’t wait to sponsor and participate in the event next year and look forward to you joining.
