Dr. Alan H. Farber, Dr. Vicky Batalias, and Dr. Chris Chondrogiannis all use LANAP or dental laser procedures to provide more specific, more accurate, and less invasive treatment for periodontal disease.

In my practice we are using laser dentistry to do what we call the LANAP procedure. LANAP stands for “Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure.” New attachment means that we are able to recreate what was lost from the disease process. In other words, we are able to get new attachment fibers, so we are helping the gum tissue grow tightly around the tooth where it was lost before.

The laser that we use in our practice is specifically modified to treat periodontal disease and only removes unhealthy tissue during the surgical procedure. In conventional surgery, sometimes healthy tissue will be removed. The laser is more specific, more accurate, and less invasive. One of the other things that we do not need to use during laser surgery is stitches or sutures, so there is less pulling after the healing process, which means less discomfort for the patient.batalias-lanap

The comment I get most often from patients after laser surgery is, “Wow!” They tell me that they hardly had any discomfort. They may take an over the counter pain reliever such as Motrin or Tylenol for two days at the most, and then their mouth feels better.

From my perspective, the results of using laser surgery are impressive. In follow-up appointments I am seeing that the tissue is not bleeding, and it is healthier and tighter. Their breath is good.

We have patients who come to our office with loose teeth. Sometimes they have been told that they need to have their teeth removed and they need to get into a denture. By using the laser, I am seeing the teeth actually tighten up. The gums get tighter too. This decrease in the looseness or mobility of these teeth can delay the placement of a denture for a long time. Patients are very excited and my restorative doctors are also thrilled with the results.
