Hauppauge periodontist Dr. Alan H. Farber lists 7 reasons that dental implants are preferable to a bridge—including no need for root canals!

Dental implants are often preferable to a conventional bridge for a number of reasons:

  1. A dental implant increases the strength and support of the area of the jaw where the tooth is missing.
  2. With a three-unit bridge, we have to prepare the adjacent teeth, which means that in order to put a bridge on these teeth, we have to remove the outside tooth structure of healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Sometimes that tooth structure will be near the nerve and the patient will then need root canal treatment on a tooth in addition to the bridge.
  3. The area of the mouth around the bridge is much more difficult to clean, so teeth in that area may be more prone to decay. Lack of proper cleaning also increases the chance for gum disease.
  4. 3-unit-implant-bridge_ti-abutments_tcm261-41493An implant will never decay and will never need root canal.
  5. Bridges often have to be replaced over a period of 10 to 15 years. Patients should not only consider the initial cost of a dental implant versus a bridge, but the need to eventually replace that bridge.
  6. With proper maintenance, a dental implant can last a lifetime. Dental implants should be maintained just like we maintain our natural teeth. Typically we recommend three to six month hygiene visits both with the periodontist and the hygienist. The reason is that we get a lot of bacteria in the mouth, and an implant is really a sophisticated medical device. Like any other medical device, it needs proper care and maintenance
  7. Patients prefer implants. I have several patients with a bridge on one side and a single tooth implant on the other side, and they prefer the single tooth implant. The implant is stronger, it feels better, and it looks more natural than a bridge.
